Elephant's Dream
Elephants Dream is the world’s first open movie, made entirely with open source graphics software such as Blender, and with all production files freely available to use however you please, under a Creative Commons license.
The short film was created by the Orange Open Movie Project studio in Amsterdam during 2005/2006, bringing together a diverse team of artists and developers from all over the world.

Love the concept, I'm curious what the budget for this was though.
I loved the scene where everything but the characters was almost in B&W. I have been a sucker for that effect ever since I first saw it in Schindler's list and then later in Sin City.
I know what you mean, it felt like Spielberg was reaching for a cheap trick with that level of starkness, but I think he pulled it off to good effect.
